All About Me!

I’m Lauren Ries, an artist based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. On a good day, you can almost always find me at my desk (or on the floor, on my bed, at the kitchen table, on my front steps) painting. Any day that I can pick up a brush is a good one. As you can probably tell, I’m passionate about painting (tacos are a close second). It all started with tempera paints and Crayola. As a kid in the summer, the sidewalk was my canvas and colored chalk was my medium. In university I focused on science (BSC and BSN) but always balanced it out with fine art classes. I started out with acrylics and later branched out into oils and other mixed media. It wasn’t until just after my son was born that my love affair with watercolor began. I haven’t looked back.

I love exploring all that watercolor has to offer. It’s a challenging medium, a constant push-pull between being in control and letting go. Watercolor has taught me so much both while creating and in life. It has taught me that less (more often than not) is more and that mistakes can become masterpieces. That imperfections are beautiful, that I will fail (a lot), that I shouldn’t be so hard on myself, and that trying new things is scary but totally worth it.
